DRAINAGE

Good drainage is key. Pot into a planter with a drainage hole or create drainage layers by adding aerating mixes such as gravel, pebbles, perlite, vermiculite, bark or other organic materials. This creates room for roots to grow, letting air, nutrients and moisture to flow so the plant can breathe easy. See advice on pots and drainage on this page.

REPOTTING

REHOMING FOR A HEALTHY PLANT

Giving your plants more room and the fresh nutrients of new soil will help them grow faster, healthier and to their fullest potential. Typically when repotting your plant if you want to encourage growth go 1-2 inches up in pot size diameter at a time.

There are benefits for you too – this practice is calming and there is something very grounding about getting your hands dirty when you are repotting. Delicately handling the roots creates a connection to the natural world within the comfort of your own home. Studies show that if a person repots a plant, they are more likely to keep it alive, as the act of handling and caring for a plant makes them feel more committed to its health. When you next repot, take time to mindfully enjoy the process, knowing that this deed is going to help your plant flourish and bloom. Reflect on how you too can make space in your ‘pot’ and what enriching nutrients you can add to your ‘mix’ to enable yourself to bloom.
